art’otel London Battersea Power Station
What: An eclectic Raddison hotel in London’s regenerated Battersea Power Station

London’s long-awaited Battersea Power Station is now open for business, following a colossal £9 billion regeneration. Those wishing to stay the night can check into art’otel, with lively interiors by Spanish design maestro Jaime Hayon. Artworks throughout the property have been selected and also created by Hayon, including bright ceramics and tapestries, alongside photography by Dutch artist Nienke Klunder. It is the first UK outpost for the art’otel group, owned by Raddison, and is set in the sinuous new 15-storey Battersea Roof Gardens development. From February, guests can also enjoy the hotel’s social spaces, including a rooftop bar and infinity pool with far-reaching views across the city.

What: A sustainably minded stay in London’s premium postcode

Mayfair has no shortage of well-heeled hotels, but a new 2023 opening promises to be the postcode’s greenest property. 1 Hotel Mayfair is a modern, eco-conscious development with a farm-to-table restaurant, garden terrace and Bamford wellness spa. Spaces are furnished using wood from downed trees in local parks, and don’t expect to find even a whiff of plastic. Michelin starred chef Tom Sellers will be in the kitchen, cooking up seasonal fare using locally sourced ingredients. It is the first UK opening from the 1 Hotel group, known for its eco-leaning residences across the US and China.

The Emory, London
What: a spectacular suite-only hotel

Maybourne Hotel Group, which counts Claridge’s, The Connaught and The Berkeley among its prestigious properties, will open The Emory this winter 2023. The suite-only hotel will transform a modernist building in Knightsbridge designed by the late Richard Rogers, with views over Hyde Park. The hotel has partnered with a phalanx of esteemed interior designers for the project, including Alexandra Champalimaud, André Fu, Pierre-Yves Rochon, Rémi Tessier and Patricia Urquiola.

Mama Shelter, known for its affordable and funky hotels, is continuing its global expansion in 2023 with new sites across France in Rennes and Dijon. The former will include the group’s first spa, nestled under stone vaults in the belly of the hotel, and a rooftop bar. This brings its portfolio to 17 hotels worldwide, including London’s Shoreditch, Prague, Los Angeles and Rio de Janeiro.

Nōstos Serifos, Greece

For those dreaming of blissfully sunny climes and serenity, Nōstos Serifos is an independently owned boutique hotel on the island of Serifos in Greece, opening summer 2023. Everything has been designed with sustainability in mind, from the use of responsible building materials to an industry-leading approach to its carbon footprint. This includes partnering with Swiss company Climeworks to extract CO2 emissions from the atmosphere for a carbon-neutral environment. The hotel is within walking distance of the area’s restaurants and waterfront bars, set on the edge of the Aegean sea.

Six Senses Rome
What: a palazzo-turned-palatial hotel in the Italian capital

Six Senses is building on its wellness empire with several new openings in 2023. Following its first resort in Switzerland in Crans-Montana near Geneva, Six Senses will open in Rome in autumn 2023. Spanish architect Patricia Urquiola has been tasked with sensitively transforming the 15th-century palazzo building, blending heritage features with thoroughly modern details. The five-star hotel will feature 95 rooms and a buzzy Italian cafe-restaurant with an outdoor courtyard. An opulent spa draws on traditional Roman baths, while guests can also partake in yoga on the rooftop terrace, against a backdrop of the city’s domed skyline. In keeping with Six Senses’ sustainable ethos, the build prioritises renewable energy and water conservation, alongside recycled and local materials.
Six Senses is also opening its first Middle Eastern property in Dubai, set on a private stretch of beach on Palm Jumeirah’s West Crescent.

Shinta Mani Mustang
What: A sustainably-minded luxury resort in Nepal

One of the most exciting openings in Asia in 2023, Shinta Mani Mustang is the latest development from the Shinta Mani group, known for its maximalist, all-inclusive resorts designed in collaboration with architect Bill Bensley. The high-end property is hidden in the Himalayas in one of Nepal’s most unique, previously off-limit regions. Drawing on Tibetan design, each of the 29 rooms are responsibly built using local stone, slate and wood, set against the beguiling backdrop of Nilgiri mountain.
The Shinta Mani group is committed to giving back to local communities. Alongside its resorts, their Shinta Mani Foundation invests in free education, healthcare, food and shelter for Cambodians in need. To launch its Mustang property, Shinta Mani is partnering with Nepal’s Pasang Lhamu Foundation, which provides support to the area’s marginalised women and children.

The Ned, Doha
What: The smart Soho House-owned brand opens in the Middle East

Technically not a 2023 opening, The Ned Doha opened at the tail end of 2022, in time for Qatar’s World Cup. Set against stirring views of the Arabian Gulf, the hotel occupies the former Ministry of the Interior building and houses 90 bedrooms and suites alongside a swimming pool, spa and club lounge, designed by David Chipperfield with interiors by Soho House Design. Much like the original Ned outpost in London, a collection of restaurants fills the ground floor, with a central stage for nightly live music and marble furnishings in a signature rich green hue. The hotel’s artwork enlists more than 100 local artists, more than three quarters of whom are female.

This Santa Monica high rise sits right on the beachfront and dates back to 1933. The hotel is reopening in January 2023 following an extensive revamp by London and Los Angeles-based design firm Fettle (also responsible for several Hoxton and Locke properties). There is an ocean-view Sunset Terrace restaurant, art gallery and library, while guests can also make use of complimentary bicycles during their stay to whizz down the Santa Monica boulevard.
Trailborn Rocky Mountains, Colorado
What: A stylish stay by Rocky Mountain National Park

Trailborn is a new hospitality brand rooted in the great outdoors. The group was founded by Mike Weiss and Ben Weinberg, who recognised a need for thoughtfully-designed accommodation in proximity to the world’s natural wonders. Each property draws on its surroundings, from snow-capped peaks to wineries, and Estes Park in Colorado’s iconic Rocky Mountains is no different. Set to open in Spring 2023 on the cusp of Rocky Mountain National Park, the hotel is thoughtfully designed with sustainable cork floors and plenty of outdoor space for socialising, set against layers of lush forestry and mountains. Trailborn is committed to using renewable energy sources, and for each online booking made, it will make a donation to the Rocky Mountain Conservancy to support local land conservation efforts. There are further plans afoot to open sites in Mendocino, California, the Grand Canyon, Arizona, and Highlands, North Carolina.

What: A boutique hotel in Brooklyn that supports the local arts community

Drift Palm Springs

Joining Palm Spring’s swathe of palm-fringed, mid-century modern properties is Drift, a boutique hotel in the heart of the desert resort city. The independent hospitality brand launched in 2021 with its first hotel in José del Cabo in 2021, followed by Santa Barbara in 2022. Opening in February, the new Palm Springs outpost is perfectly positioned to explore the area’s galleries and restaurants. Rooms range from cosy studios to four-bedroom suites, while the restaurant’s menu draws on the group’s Baja Californian roots. Bunkhouse Group, noted for its delightful boutique hotels, is opening a new property in the hip Condesa neighbourhood in Mexico City. Hotel San Fernando will feature just 18 rooms, alongside a lobby bar, lounge and guests-only rooftop. Interiors will complement the art deco building’s original features, with furnishings by local designers including CDMX-based studio La Metropolitana, and local designer Rebeca Cors.
