Born in the Nørrebro neighbourhood of Copenhagen, Sebastian Himmelstrup is a food and travel writer now based in the countryside outside the city. With an equal love for surfing, the outdoors and great food, his best life is lived when in the intersection between the waves up north and the gastronomy of Copenhagen. His travel writing is mostly featured in Denmarks biggest newspaper, Politiken, and his food writings in the magazine, Gastro.
What does a journey mean to you?
I always travel for food. No matter if it’s a surf or ski trip with friends or a weekend city-getaway with the family, food is the underlying theme of my every wake moment. So I guess a journey is not complete without some great food at the end of the road. And I love to get out of my way to eat. The further the drive and the more unassuming the restaurant, the better.
Where do you spend your day off in Copenhagen?
Definitely grabbing a good coffee somewhere. Preferably at a café I haven’t tried yet, sitting outsite. And then getting on the bike and cycling a bit north to go for a swim in the sea. A newer interest of mine is also to look for funky unknown restaurants in the suburbs of Copenhagen. It’s often you strike gold.
What should a visitor to Copenhagen not miss?
Bathing in the harbour on a sunny day. And smørrebrød, which is maybe a cliché in Copenhagen, but if done well it’s amazing. And actually something all Danes love. You should also try and find yourself at a classic smoky bodega (pub) for a beer. I think the vibe is unique to Copenhagen (and Denmark).
